Creating a promo code
To create a promo code, go to your Seller Portal and select Promo Codes from the menu. Click 'Create Promo Code' to open the creation wizard.
The wizard has three steps:
Set your discount – Choose between a percentage off (e.g., 20%) or a fixed dollar amount (e.g., $5 off). You can also set minimum requirements, usage limits, and date ranges.
Choose applicable listings – Apply the code to all your listings or select specific items.
Review and create – Check your settings and confirm. You'll receive a shareable link to send to buyers.
Discount types and options
Percentage discount
Takes a percentage off the item price. For example, a 20% code on a $10 item saves the buyer $2.
Fixed amount discount
Takes a set dollar amount off each item. For example, a $2 off code saves $2 regardless of the item price. The discount cannot exceed the item price.
Minimum requirements
You can require buyers to meet a minimum before the code applies:
- Minimum spend – Buyer must have at least a certain amount from your store in their cart (e.g., $10 minimum)
- Minimum items – Buyer must have at least a certain number of your items in their cart (e.g., 2 items minimum)
Usage limits
Set how many times the code can be used in total. Once the limit is reached, the code automatically deactivates. Leave blank for unlimited uses.
Date ranges
Set a start date for scheduled promotions or an end date for limited-time offers. Expired codes will no longer work at checkout.
Specific listings
Apply the code to all your listings or choose specific items. This is useful for clearing out certain products or promoting new releases.
How discounts are applied
When a customer applies your promo code, our system automatically calculates the best discount for them - and discounts don't stack.
If a product is already discounted (like a sale price), the promo code won't add an additional discount on top.
Example: You have a product normally priced at $10 that's currently on sale for $8. A customer applies your "20% off" promo code. The system compares:
- Sale price: $8
- Promo price: $8 (20% off $10)
Since both work out to $8, the customer pays $8 — not $6.40. Your promo code still works, it just won't double-dip on existing discounts.
Sharing with buyers
Once you create a promo code, you have several ways to share it:
Shareable link
After creating a code, you'll receive a link to your store with the promo code built in. You can get this link any time from your promo page by clicking on the promo.
When buyers click this link, they'll be taken to your store page and a notification will show up the top, letting them know the code will be automatically applied at checkout.
Example: teachbuysell.com.au/store/your-store-name?promo=SAVE20
Share the code directly
Tell buyers the code through your social media, email newsletter, or product descriptions. They can enter it manually in their cart before checkout.
Where buyers enter the code
Buyers will see a "Have a promo code?" field in their cart. They enter the code and click Apply. If valid, the discount appears immediately.
Tips:
Shareable links makes it easier for customers as they don't need to key in the code at check out - ideal for social media and email campaigns!
Include the code in your store banner or listing descriptions for visibility
Codes only apply to your listings – buyers with items from multiple sellers will see your discount on your items only
Managing your promo codes
Your Promo Codes page shows all your codes with their status, usage, and discount details.
Status types:
Active – Code is live and can be used
Scheduled – Code has a future start date
Expired – Code has passed its end date
Used up – Code has reached its usage limit
Inactive – Code has been manually deactivated
Viewing performance
Click on any promo code to see total times used, total discount given, which listings it applies to, recent usage activity. We'll add more analytics in the near future.
Editing a promo code
Once a promo code is created, it can't be edited. This protects your customers from unexpected changes.
If you need to make changes, simply:
Deactivate the existing promo code
Create a new one with the same code name
Deactivating a promo code
Click the deactivate button to immediately stop a code from working. This is useful if a code is being shared more widely than intended. Deactivated codes can be viewed in your history but cannot be reactivated.
Tips:
Review your active codes regularly to ensure they're still relevant.
Set usage limits on codes shared publicly to control your discount exposure.
Use the performance data to understand which promotions drive the most sales (more performance data to come!).
